Acupressure Treatment For Babies & Young Children

Attention all parents of young children and babies!

Read on for more about a gentle, non-invasive, drug-free and effective therapy to help your poorly child recover from everyday ailments.

Acupressure is an ancient form of healing, related to Acupuncture, but which uses pressure on specific points instead of needles. Used on adults, Acupressure uses quite intensive pressure over several minutes, which is fine for adults, but too rough for babies.

You can, however, use a very gentle pressure on babies to help remedy some everyday troubles. For babies under 3 months use a very light, gentle pressure for a total of only 10-20 minutes a day. Just a few seconds of gently pressing on each point every few hours should be sufficient to help in any of the situations below.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Acupressure is not a substitute for medical treatment and should only be used as a complementary tool. If in doubt, consult your baby's doctor.

Cough Relief Acupressure Points | Jane Goodman Holistic Therapies | 07908 010005

1. Congestion Relief Points

When your baby has a stuffed-up, blocked nose, press gently on either side of the widest part of her nostrils. Massage gently in a circular motion for 10 seconds. This will help to reduce the inflammation of his/her nasal passages so that they can breathe more easily. Do this up to 6 times a day, every couple of hours.

2. Cough Suppressant Points

These pressure points are found on the top of your baby's index fingers, just above the knuckles. Just holding his fingers will be sufficient. Whenever he/she has a bout of coughing, try to hold on to these points for about 5 seconds, whilst giving them a cuddle. The cough should calm while you hold his/her fingers, and the duration of the cough should be reduced significantly.

3. Teething Pain Relief Points

These points can be used for pain anywhere on your baby's head (i.e.: earache) including the misery of teething pain. They are located on the fullest/plumpest part of the palms below the thumbs (known as the Mount of Venus). Press on one or both of them for about 10 seconds each time, using a gentle massaging action, every 2 hours or so. This should not only reduce the gum pain, but also reduce the volume of saliva produced, which can lead to skin rashes, diarrhoea and nappy rash.

Sleep Inducing Acupressure Point | Jane Goodman Holistic Therapies | 07908 010005

4. Sleep Inducing Point

This almost magical point is found between and slightly above your baby's eyebrows (also known as the Third Eye, the seat of our intuition.) Just stroke it gently for 10-20 seconds and watch his/her give up her resistance to sleep, as he/she slowly relaxes and closes their eyes as they succumbs to her exhaustion.
